That is the future prospects and possibility guaranteed by the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) in an initiative with Pacific Energy, Tonga office to carry out a feasibility study to upgrade the country’s fuel transport and storage infrastructure.
Launching this initiative on Friday 14th August at the Pacific Energy fuel terminal, Deputy Chief of Mission and Public Affairs officer at U.S Embassy in Nuku’alofa, Mr. Devon Brown together with the Honorable Prime Minister, Lord Fakafanua marked it with a hand-shake as well as a few remarks.
“This initiative highlights how Tonga, the United States, Pacific Energy can work together on key issues that are critical to every household here in Tonga.” Mr. Brown said.
He continued to state that through this initiative, citizens of both parties will be able to make the United States and Tonga stronger in the fuel sector.
‘This U.S. investment will fund a study of three infrastructure options for Tonga to receive medium-range fuel tanks directly, thereby eliminating the need for trans-shipment through third countries and increasing Tonga’s fuel storage capacity from 50 days to approximately 60 days of supply.”
With that being said, the Hon. Prime Minister, Lord Fakafanua in his statement couldn’t have emphasized enough on the importance of this milestone for Tonga as the pathway to energy security.
He stated that the study funded by USTDA is the first material step to achieving what Tonga has always been wanted and that is to have a medium MRX tanker bunked directly in our shores.
“That will also enable economic growth, that will empower our farmers through their tractors, our fishermen through their fishing vessels, more reliable and stable fuel supply for the outer islands and Hapai and for Vava‘u and I think more importantly should realize a cheaper cost of fuel for our people and fuel is so important because it is the lifeblood of our economy. It drives transportation, it drives everything from agriculture to fisheries to small industries and it’s so pivotal that this time of great vulnerability that we have implemented a roadmap for greater resilience and economic empowerment.”
On that note, Pacific Energy South West Pacific CEO, Mr. Stephane Cadel elaborated on the benefits of this milestone to Tonga with a stronger fuel supply chain meaning energy security, increased resilience to supply disruptions and natural disasters, improved logistics, lower transportation costs and a more efficient energy system capable of supporting the country’s long-term economic growth.
“Ultimately, this project is about providing greater certainty for the people of Tonga, ensuring that the country has reliable access to the energy it needs to support its economy, its essential services and its future development.
Together, we are laying the foundations for a stronger, more secure and more resilient energy future for Tonga-one built not only on infrastructure, but also on strong and lasting local partnerships alongside local investors, making this a success that is truly shared with the people of Tonga.”
